Joey Dauben Sentenced To 30 Years In Prison

I guess this is one last little lesson he learns after its too late....don't piss off the judge.  Joey Dauben was sentenced today and they will stack his sentence instead of running them concurrently.  "At the end of the day what this court has to look at is Mr. Dauben is like any other pedophile,” Wolf said. “There’s nothing special or unique about him.” from the Corsicana Daily sun.  How truly sad it is that Joey finds out that the rules do apply to him in such a devastating way.

This ruling is vindication for many of the victims Joey has attacked through his Ellis County Observer, but its a sad day all around.  Most sex offenders are not granted parole until 80% of their sentence is served, so Joey will be a 55 year old man before he gets out.  He was also given 10 years probation once he is released.

First and foremost, we should all thank this brave witness who’s actions and testimony ended countless future crimes by Joey.  And no, the lesson of this trial isn’t about not drinking alcohol, its about a demented mind.  If you think you have even the slightest urge to have sex with a child, please do the right thing for yourself and society and get treatment before your story ends in tragedy like Joey’s.  Tell a trained doctor in private about your problem before everyone reads about it on the front page.

Joey Dauben had everything at his fingertips.  He started out so young and energetic, he was willing to work hard at his job and he loved doing it.  His enthusiasm was certainly an asset to the Ellis County Press, at least initially.  Joey would get in his car and drive all around the county to track down leads wherever they took him.  He especially liked the political election season, as his boss Charlie Hatfield would take the handcuffs off Joey and he would be allowed to write political hit pieces on certain candidates.  This was what Joey really loved to do, and the buzz he generated county wide as a result of it only fueled his ego.

Pretty soon he just wanted to do the shock jock stories.  All the others seemed boring and mundane.  This caused friction with him and Charlie as Hatfield was trying to run a business, not a gossip site.  Eventually they parted ways and there was bad blood on both sides.  Joey took his Ellis County Observer and turned in into a 24/7 gossip site.  He started to get into the missing children and pedophile ring coverage and decided to not limit himself to just Ellis County, but go nationwide instead.  This is what led him to Barbara Farris, Presley Crowe, and Connie Bedwell.  The more he got into this the more unhinged he became, perhaps knowing that he would be accused of this very thing all along.  Even his friends would admit that they don’t really know the Joey Dauben of today, they just remember the fun optimistic Joey they first met.

Joey Dauben will now fade away from the lime light, but he will never be forgotten.  Some will remember him as a political activists, an advocate, a slanderer, a gossip whore, a friend, and now as a convicted child rapist.  There are so many lessons that his life should serve as a warning to us.  I think one of the biggest lessons is for parents in how tragic an ending you can have if you never allow your child to face the consequences for his actions.  If Joey had to pay in full for some of the lesser crimes he committed early on, he may not have had to pay this devastating price now.

  1. This epic story has turned into a tragedy all around. So sad.

I do object to him being called a pedophile. Even though we learned that he used standard grooming techniques, that label is really one for a trained professional to give. I objected to Joey using it on thw innocent, and I still object to it as a label for him (even guilty as charged).

  2. I don't believe that teen was his only victim and if that's the case, he belongs behind bars. Sexual predator would be a better label but society generally states pedophiles are those who have sex with children.

@ yappy: I agree, I can't believe this was Joey's only victim. It's just the first time he got caught. Sexual predator is a better label. I'm wondering if Wolf used the word "pedophile" because of Joey's focus. This was a teen, on the verge of sexual maturity. I think of a child as being under the age of 12.

      It is all so sad.

    2. Wolf probably did use it for that reason. And Joey probably does deserve that label because he used it so freely on innocent people. It is the correct word in Joey vernacular.

Ginger was quoting, but I think it is important to make the distinction between child predator and pedophile. I don't want to stoop to Joey's level even if he deserves it.

Your statement is 100% accurate Ginger. He even had probation/ no jail on the table and I suppose his ego was far too great to take that because he felt nothing was ever his fault, always someone else.

I'm stunned quite frankly. I didn't feel it would end up being consecutive

    1. I'm sorry but as a Joey victim (not sexual victim) I can't help but feel a little justice and vindication. He set out to ruin many people's lives just because. I was one of the lucky victims in that what he tried to spin on me just made him look like a joke. However, I have personally seen him destroy people's lives and careers, needlessly.

In my opinion and in several of my co-workers opinion he deserved what he got. The best thing about the whole thing is that he has no one to blame but himself.

    2. "he has no one to blame but himself."

yeah thats another huge lesson in this, the fool had straight up probation only on the table right before trial and he picks 30 years plus 10 probation. And then even after the conviction if he would have come clean to the jury he still might have gotten a light sentence, but no he drank the hemlock every step of the way.

    3. @spawn I never meant to imply it's not a justified sentence, I am merely stunned because I thought it would run concurrent.

Someone close to me was devastated by Joey's endless chaos in her world. My heart breaks for the hell she went through because of Joey without question. As much as she's suffered through other things in her life, she often felt what Joey did was a close second. It rips my heart to no end knowing she suffered like she did. The other person Joey wrote about that I know of, was Connie's ex and my understanding is he has a very strong support group and an understanding employer regardless what Joey attempted to falsify.

I only wish Joey's parents would have been able to pull some tough love on their kid in the past few months and get him to wake up. Now, its over. By the time Joey is out, they both may be deceased. That is, if he makes it. But at this point while I don't know Joey, I don't believe he has the skills it takes to survive hard time and it may end by his own hands, not anyone behind bars.

    4. Spawn, I don't think there is a thing in the world wrong with feeling vindicated.

Joey is guilty. Joey has done nothing to show remorse or change. He alone is at fault for this. And he deserves it.

I think that such a long sentence is sad for almost anybody. Even a murderer. Sentencing time makes me think about the parents and Joey as a baby. Children are born innocent and full of promise for the future. It is sad to see that all wasted. But yes, Joey is the responsible one ane must pay. (Many if his victims still suffer as a result too.)

I wonder where it all went wrong and what could have changed his path. That is why it is sad to me. I am not a Joey victim. I am sure I would feel differently if I were. I didn't mean to take anything away from you.

I do not feel that anyone has taken anything from me. I say that I am his victim, but I do not think of myself as a victim. Like I said I was one of the lucky ones. What Joey tried to do to me didn't stick because I have always maintained a very professional image. I have always kept my nose clean and because of that everything Joey made up about me was immediately dismissed by my employer as well as the community.
I'm not saying in any way shape or form that his other victims deserved what he did to them or where bad people. He exploited the bad situations in people's lives and made them victims for it.
He was unable to do that to me.

    6. You need to know that Joey had toxic information about a huge pedophile ring that has operated long before the Franklin Cover up. They framed and silenced him just as they did Columbine victim whistleblower Mark Taylor. Google Release Mark Taylor.

  4. I'll probably have more substantive commentary later, but my first thought reading this is that it's a very good piece. It's relatively balanced, gives broad perspective, includes a relevant exhortation, and sums up insightfully. Well done.

    1. I agree. This isn't a celebration even for the victims. Yes, joey should pay for his crimes. Yes I believe he is an ongoing danger. And I believe that for the publishing victims more than tge sexual abuse. Yes, this may not be the first sexual abuse victim, but maybe Joey's crazy allegations against all these "pedophile rings" was his misguided attempt at atonement. Either way, he never stood up or presented that he was going to stop harming people with his words.

It is sad sad sad that his life has been wasted.

    2. Thanks. I know most people figure I'm someone who must hate Joey but I dont in the least. I still consider him a friend and this sentence really takes my breath away. Its justice, but it hurts because I dont think he can make it.

But like you said earlier, Joey's life is one that needs a complete study done on it, he has so many different components going on, and then only last week we hear about the possible sexual abuse of Joey when he was young.

@ Anon: Bill pulled Joey's film before the first trial started and that appeared be because he was mad at Presley, AMPP, et al. Seems to me that Bill only deletes the bad apples when he's confronted and unable to deny the truth. He's still got several abusers and false accusers hanging out.

Wait - I'm wrong, Bill pulled Joey's film after the first trial. But, you know he was convicted because there was a conspiracy and the courts are corrupt. So, he was perfect for the movie.

  7. 1. Pedophilia is legally defined and medically defined.
2.Medically there is no cure. Going to the Dr with his urges could have provided him with counseling but pedophiles have a high recidivism rate.

Here is the legal definition, and I would agree that Joey is a pedophile and that is the proper term assuming his conviction was correct.

"A person afflicted with a serious mental disorder, a mental abnormality known as pedophilia, a sexual perversion in which children are preferred as sexual partner."
    http://www.duhaime.org/LegalDictionary/P/Pedophile.aspx

Those who tell people to research before they post should do the same IMO.

    1. I didn't tell anybody to research pedophilia before the posted. You made my point. It is a legally and medically defined term. Do you know that Joey has a general attraction to yung boys?

Oh and speaking of dedifinitions, you missed the generally prepubescant part if the definition. Usually they are defined as 14 or younger. I will pull a Webby here, but the boy was almost 15.

I think yappys use of the word child predator is much more fitting. I DO have a psychology degree, but I DO NOT feel that enough information has been given to DIAGNOSE Joey.

Is it possible or even probable the definition fits, very much so. Unless yiu have spent hours counselling Joey or know of other instances or Joey has admitted to such attractions, I don't think you ate qualifies to give that label. It can be your opinion, but it has NOT been proven as fact.

    2. If the judge called him a pedophile than a pedophile he is. I am not sure who "wolf" was in the above post but I assumed it was the judge. If it was not the judge I will STFU on this point. If it was the judge, pedophile can also be legally defined and the judge can certainly do that.

    3. NothingbettertodotodayJanuary 25, 2013 at 8:30 PM

Anon 7:28 - Wolf is the prosecutor. I'd tell you the name of the Judge but I can't spell it. Like yappy says, it looks something like letgomyego. OReader is right, there was no testimony or evaluation to determine whether Joey is a "pedophile". That was not the issue of the trial, so nothing for the Judge or the DA to decide in this regard. The point of the trial simply was, did he or did he not diddle the boy.

      Delete
    4. Thanks NBTDT. I was driving when I read the response, so I decided it best not to reply right then. You made the points in my head. Joey was not on trial to decide if he is a pedophile. I don't think the use of the word was an attempt to redefine it legally. The evidence presented doesn't fulfill all the aspects of a "diagnosis." (That doesn't mean he can't be one - we just haven't been given enough information.) The term pedophile IS DEFINED in the DSM. And, the information from the trial does not meet all the criteria for a diagnosis. If you'd like me to break out my DSM, I just reorganized my bookshelf yesterday and know exactly where it is. Courts don't define pedophilia. The look to medical/mental health professionals. It isn't something that is decided "on the fly." And yeah, as far as I know the judge didn't use the term.

He was convicted. Seems like his sentence wasn't as harsh as Joey's. I recall that on multiple counts, the prison sentences ran concurrently.

    2. Different counties, different judges, different juries. Ennis is in Ellis County, Corsicana is Navarro County. But also remember that the Ag teacher copped to part of the crime. And he didn't go the conspiracy claim like Joey did.

    3. I will say this, unfortunately Joey was used as an example. This is only speculation, but I'm sure the judge, while doing his sentencing investigation, found everything that Joey has put out there. If I was in that judge's shoes I would have done the same thing. Even if I didn't know him. If Joey would have been a regular citizen in the way of "blending in" the judge would not have been so hard. Ultimately it was Joey's history that got him 30 years not the offense it's self.

Appears the difference might be owning up to what you did. Jaeggers plead out, he was originally charged with 12 counts, I think.

The former teacher at Ennis High School earlier pleaded guilty to online solicitation of a minor, improper relations between an educator and a student and sexual performance by a child. Jaggears was sentenced to five concurrent 5-year prison terms.

  9. Having read the entire article from the Corsicana paper I can see how Joey received the sentence he did. While this is heart breaking for some, vindication for others, and it leaves me devoid of emotion.
I will call this the worst series of mistakes Joey ever made. Joey had an enthusiasm, charisma, charm, and banter ability second to none. Joey made the decision to take this to trial. Joey decided that he would call this a conspiracy on the stand. Joey decided to divert blame instead of accepting this.
The poorest of choices and bad decisions can not override the fact that a once up and coming reporter has crashed and burned. He suffered flame out. His ego and swagger placed him in the most precarious of places. Now that he has taken his final fall he might just learn that ego and swagger won't get you everything.

  10. I have to point out one thing that the Corsicana Sun got wrong. When/if Joey is released on parole he will have to finish his 30 year term completely before his probation will start for the other 10 year sentence. With the sentences being "stacked" he will serve 40 years total under the watchful eye of the state.

He will also forever be a registered sex offender.

    1. Anon, he's at the Joe Gurney facility in Anderson county. As I understand it, Joe Gurney is in many respects a "transient facility", meaning most of the inmates are placed there until a final determination can be made as to their long term placement. Joey will probably be there 6-14 months, depending on a variety of factors, before being transferred to the facility in which he will serve most of his sentence.

But hey, on the bright side for him -- he can look forward to one last leisurely country drive to his new home. A brief taste of freedom, if you will, before descending back into the bowels of the penal system.
